VW has launched a poll where motorists can vote on the name for the company’s latest SUV – which will be built in South Africa at VW’s Kariega factory.
While the vehicle is already available in other markets – such as Brazil, where it is called the Tera – VW wants the local iteration to have a different name in the South African market.
It has therefore provided four options for South Africans to vote between – Tengo, Tavi, Tiva, and Tion.
- Tengo stands for rich cultural significance in African languages and describes qualities like strength, resilience, and purpose.
- Tavi is a gender-neutral word meaning good or beloved. In Latin, it also means eight.
- Tiva means nature in Hebrew and is also associated with vitality, life, and energy.
- Tion signifies aesthetic appeal and evokes a sense of movement and change.

About the new SUV
The vehicle, which is currently known as the “A0 SUV” pending the selection of an official name, is expected to slot below the T-Cross in VW’s South African range of vehicles.
It will compete in the entry-level car segment, which has recently been dominated by Chinese and Indian brands.
When it comes to specifications, it has similar dimensions to the T-Cross, albeit with a shorter height and a smaller 350-litre boot.
Performance-wise, the new vehicle’s base model will have a familiar 1.0-litre petrol engine that generates 56kW and 92Nm.
Higher tier models will have access to a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (TSI) engine, instead.
The TSI version will have five-speed manual and six-speed automation options that deliver up to 85kW and 170Nm of power, while the base version will only be available in a manual configuration.
The A0 SUV is scheduled to go into production by 2027, and while local pricing is not yet available, it is currently priced at the equivalent of approximately R315,000 in Brazil.
By comparison, the T-Cross currently costs R399,900 in South Africa.
