Best-selling used cars in South Africa right now – With pricing

Thousands of South Africans are looking for a bakkie on the used car market right now.

AutoTrader’s latest sales data shows that the Ford Ranger was the most popular second-hand vehicle in June 2025, selling a grand total of 1,813 units.

Not far behind was the Toyota Hilux, which managed to sell an impressive 1,450 examples.

It wasn’t all bakkie sales, mind you, as the VW Polo Vivo and Polo also proved to be a big hit.

The Vivo sold 1,261 examples, while the Polo moved 1,247 units, putting them in third and fourth place, respectively.

The Toyota Fortuner then proved to be the SUV of choice for used car shoppers with 689 purchases.

This was followed by the Suzuki Swift in sixth with 584 units, followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 in seventh with 480.

Another pickup, the Isuz D-Max, came eighth with 443 sales, and the Toyota Corolla Cross was right behind it with 437 units under its belt.

The final spot in the top 10 was scooped up by the Toyota Starlet, adding another 435 units to the tally.

Importantly, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class did not feature in June, meaning that not a single luxury car made it into the top 10.

This is a major departure from what the pre-owned market looked like only a few years ago, when the C-Class and the BMW 3 Series made regular appearances.

It’s another sign that motorists are giving up on owning premium models – used or new – and are turning towards more affordable alternatives from Chinese and Indian brands.
