2025 Belgian Grand Prix – Piastri holds on for important win

McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris fought it out for the win at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix – with the former holding on amid a late-race charge from his teammate.

The field had to handle a race that was initially delayed by over an hour due to heavy rain, but while the race needed a rolling start due to wet conditions, it was actually full dry racing for the lion’s share of the race.

The McLaren drivers enjoyed a substantial lead over the other teams, with Charles Leclerc rounding out the podium nearly a full pitstop behind second-placed Norris.

In a rare event – particularly given the race had started out in such rainy conditions – all 20 driver’s finished the race.

We unpack the key highlights from the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, below.

The battle for the win

It became evident very early that there were only two drivers in with a realistic chance of winning the race – Norris and Piastri.

The McLaren pair started out in the top two spots, with Norris having the honour of pole position.

However, Piastri was able to pass his teammate on the first rap of racing – and the fifth lap of the race overall.

Piastri held onto this lead until the race dried up enough for the cars to move onto slicks, and with Piastri having the lead, he had the opportunity to pit before his teammate.

Norris was therefore forced to do an extra lap on the ill-suited intermediate tyres – allowing Piastri to significantly increase his gap from his teammate.

Knowing that this would be the case, Norris’ crew opted to give him the long-lasting but worse-performing hard tyre, hoping that Piastri would either have to pit again, or would have to navigate the closing laps of the race on heavily worn tyres.

This strategy showed its merits as the race continued, but was not enough to pry the win from Piastri – who ended just over three seconds clear of his teammate.

After the two McLaren drivers, Leclerc managed to secure the final podium spot, frustrating fourth-placed Max Verstappen throughout the race.

Hamilton heroics

Lewis Hamilton was arguably the star of the Belgian Grand Prix.

Starting in the pitlane, he made overtake after overtake once the race got underway, showing a command of the wet conditions that noone else could match.

Then, as the track dried up, he was one of the first to switch onto slick tyres – a strategy that paid off significantly and helped him to rise into the points.

Hamilton ultimately finished in seventh place – 11 places above his 18th spot on the grid, and under a second behind sixth-placed Alexander Albon of Williams.
