Mahindra opens new bakkie plant in South Africa

Mahindra has officially opened a new, purpose-built vehicle assembly plant in South Africa.

The Indian carmaker announced this week that it has inaugurated its new factory at the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone in KwaZulu-Natal.

The new site is located close to Mahindra’s original assembly site, which has been producing the Pik Up bakkie from semi-knock-down kits since it was established in 2018.

“Our original facility played a pivotal role in establishing our local footprint,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.

“As demand for our locally assembled Pik Up range continued to rise, we needed a facility with the scale, flexibility, and technology to meet future growth while maintaining world-class quality.”

The automaker claims that the new site has the capacity to assemble more than 1,000 Pik Up single cabs and double cabs per month.

Mahindra also stated that the factory has the ability to scale further as demand grows, and that the site is flexible enough to accommodate new models in the coming years – something made possible by the increasing level of locally-sourced components.

Earlier this year, the company partnered with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to launch a feasibility study into building a full-scale manufacturing plant in South Africa.

The insights from operations at the new Durban facility will play an important role in shaping up the study, said Mahindra.

“This investment underscores our confidence in South Africa as both a manufacturing base and a key growth market for Mahindra globally,” added Rajesh.

“It reflects our commitment to creating jobs, supporting local industry, and delivering robust, reliable vehicles that meet the needs of South African customers.”

Since assembling its first bakkie in 2018, Mahindra has grown to become one of the nation’s top 10 best-selling brands.

“South Africa is a cornerstone market in Mahindra’s international growth strategy. This new facility not only strengthens our ability to serve local customers but also enhances our regional manufacturing capabilities,” said Sachin Arolkar, Head of International Operations, Mahindra & Mahindra.

“It is a clear demonstration of our long-term commitment to invest in Africa and to make South Africa a central hub in our global operations.”

South Africa’s up-and-coming car brand

While the company didn’t provide any specific details, it will be interesting to see what Mahindra’s vision for the future looks like in South Africa.

The mention that the factory will be able to assemble new models could mean that something like the popular 3X0 crossover could soon be locally-built, but it’s too soon to say for certain.

Mahindra did state that the new site will help to improve its competitiveness in one of the most dynamic bakkie markets in the world.

The Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, VW Amarok, Isuzu D-Max, and Nissan Navara are all produced in South Africa, which gives them an advantage over imported models like the Mitsubishi Triton.

Mahindra’s new facility will, therefore, level the playing field even further for the Pik Up, which is already the fourth-best-selling light commercial vehicle in the country.

According to sales data from the Automotive Business Council, Mahindra is one of the three fastest-growing car brands in South Africa alongside Chery and Suzuki.

In fact, the Indian carmaker was the fastest-growing badge over the last financial year from April 2024 to March 2025, signifying a huge spike in consumer interest.

It achieved its best yearly sales registrations to date with 15,088 units, and broke multiple internal records with more than 1,000 SUV and 1,200 bakkie sales in a single month.
