2025 Dutch Grand Prix – Piastri wins from pole and Hadjar heroics
Drivers’ Championship leader Oscar Piastri extended his lead over teammate Lando Norris by winning the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix.
Piastri started in pole and never gave up the top spot en route to another excellent display from the young Australian.
His teammate, Norris, spent most of the race in second place until suffering an unfortunate – and rare – technical issue that forced him to retire his car.
Young RB driver Isack Hadjar took full advantage of Norris’ misfortune to find his way into third place and his maiden F1 podium.
We unpack the key highlights from the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, below.
Early battles
Fans at the Zandvoort track enjoyed excitement involving their home hero, Max Verstappen, as early as the first few turns.
Verstappen executed an audacious move on the opening lap to overtake Norris for second place.
Unfortunately – at least for the home fans – these places were swapped back on Lap 9, with the McLaren and Norris clearly faster than Verstappen in his Red Bull.
Other moves early on included Charles Leclerc overtaking George Russell for fifth place, while Alex Albon moved up from P15 to P10.
Mistakes and crashes
On Lap 23, Ferrari star Lewis Hamilton put his car into the barriers in a rare race-ending mistake from the iconic Brit.
This resulted in a slew of pitstops before the Safety Car ended – but there would be more chaos at the restart.
Liam Lawson of RB and Carlos Sainz of Williams made contact, forcing both drivers to fall back into P18 and P19 respectively.
Sainz would also receive a penalty for this incident, much to his surprise.
With about 20 laps to go, Kimi Antonelli hit Leclerc, sending the Ferrari driver into the barriers and bringing out another safety car.
Tragedy for Norris
The Safety Car restart was less eventful than before, and Norris was able to keep close to his teammate in the battle for first place – until Norris reported a strange burning smell from his vehicle.
This forced him to pull his car over – ending what was shaping up to be a tasty battle for first place.
The Safety Car once again was brought out, and the restart happened within a few laps of the race end – but no major place changes took place.
This meant that Isack Hadjar was able to hold onto a historic third place – the first podium of his young career.
After the race, it was announced that Lewis Hamilton had incurred a penalty before he crashed out for a yellow flag breach – meaning he will have a five-place grid penalty at the next race at Monza.
