Official petrol price for October announced

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has published the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect tomorrow on Wednesday, 1 October 2025.

Motorists who were hoping for some level of financial relief will, unfortunately, be disappointed, as neither petrol nor diesel has seen a meaningful change this month.

Petrol is going up, but only by an imperceptible 8c per litre.

Diesel prices are coming down, but a paltry 10c per litre reduction won’t make much of a difference to motorists’ fuel bills.

What you’re paying for fuel this month

The fact that fuel prices are, for all intents and purposes, unchanged this October can be traced back to the international trading price of oil and the US dollar/rand exchange rate.

Brent Crude oil prices remained relatively stable throughout September with an average rate of $67 per barrel, though this jumped to $69 per barrel in the last week of the month.

The last-minute increase is due to the geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and the ongoing instability in the Middle East.

The impact of this uncertainty outweighed the recent gains in the market following the OPEC+ decision to increase production in October, leading to increased supply and lower prices.

This led to a higher contribution to the Basic Fuel Price (BFP) of petrol by 16.93 cents per litre (c/l), and 8.13c/l for diesel.

Over the same period, the rand appreciated against the US dollar, going from R17.73 to R17.49 per dollar.

This resulted in a lower contribution to the BFP of 14.27c/l for petrol and 15/40c/l for diesel.

The slate levy was unchanged, but the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources approved a 6.1c/l increase (from 299.5c/l to 305.6c/l) in the price structure of petrol to accommodate a wage increase for forecourt employees.

This is in keeping with the Motor Industry Bargaining Council multi-year wage settlement agreement signed on 23 August 2025.

The differential between octane 93 and 95 is also being adjusted this October in line with the Working Rules to determine the BFP, which states that it must be adjusted on the first Wednesday of each quarter.

Based on these factors, this is how South Africa’s fuel prices are being adjusted for October 2025:

  • Petrol 93 – Increase of 1c per litre
  • Petrol 95 – Increase of 8c per litre
  • Diesel 0.05% – Decrease of 10c per litre
  • Diesel 0.005% – Decrease of 8c per litre
