Major disruptions in Gauteng this weekend

Motorists in Gauteng have been warned to prepare for traffic delays this weekend as the province prepares for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The G20 Leaders’ Summit takes place on 22 and 23 November 2025 in Johannesburg, and requires significant preparation and practice from local law enforcement.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and South African Police Service (SAPS) will conduct a coordinated joint operation.

They will be conducting the operation in Johannesburg, which will result in “temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and intermittent disruptions across key routes,” said the RTMC.

This will take place between 09:00 – 13:00 on Saturday, 15 November 2025.

“These measures are essential to enhance public safety, enforce traffic compliance, and support ongoing traffic law enforcement initiatives, including vehicle inspections and congestion management,” said the RTMC.

“Clear signage, traffic officers, and real-time updates will be provided to guide road users, and access for emergency and essential services will be always prioritised.”

This is the second dry run operation the City of Johannesburg has launched in preparation for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, as another similar operation occured three weeks ago on 24 October.

Affected areas

The RTMC says that only the City of Johannesburg will be affected, with operations targeting high-security routes, including major national highways and central urban arteries.

The following major national and regional routes will be disrupted:

  • N1
  • M1
  • N12

Additionally, the following major arterial and urban roads will be affected:

  • 5th Street
  • Maude Street
  • Daisy Street
  • Rivonia Road
  • Grayston Drive
  • Katherine Street
  • Whiteley Road
  • Melrose Boulevard
  • Athol Oaklands Road
  • Oxford Road
  • Glenhove Road
  • Jan Smuts Avenue
  • Winnie Mandela Drive
  • Hendrick Potgieter Road
  • Rand Show Road
  • Nasrec Road
  • Golden Highway (Nasrec)

The RTMC recommended a few alternative routes, as follows:

Drivers in the Roodepoort area: use Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan De Wet Road, Ontdekkers Road instead of Hendrick Potgieter Road.

Within Sandton/Rosebank/Parktown: use side streets parallel to Jan Smuts, Oxford, or Rivonia Road, such as Corlett Drive, Sandton Drive, 11th Avenue.

In southern Johannesburg, Riverlea, Nasrec and Ormonde View: use Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, Crownwood Road (Fordsburg–Crown Mines) Soweto Highway, N17, Aerodrome Road and Adcock Ingram Road.

More disruptions to come

In addition to this weekend’s disruptions, the G20 has also issued a warning of more road closures to come.

The summit takes place on 22-23 November 2025 at Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.

The G20 South Africa Coordinating Team issued a statement warning of road closures in and at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg, as well as surrounding areas, from 17-23 November 2025.

It encouraged citizens to plan their movement ahead of time, and stated that exact routes and road closures will be communicated closer to the time.
