Mercedes-Benz slashes prices by R140,000 in South Africa

As Mercedes-Benz battles back against the influx of affordable SUVs in the South African market, it has knocked thousands of rands off for no fewer than four of its models, including AMG Line options.

The German automaker decided to slash the prices of four diesel SUVs, with two models seeing their prices reduced by a whopping R140,000.

Mercedes is hoping to stay competitive in a market where more affordable options are dominating the market, leading to the brand’s reduced new car sales figures last year.

Budget-friendly SUVs from China and India have forced the German brand’s hand, as it tries to recover some ground from newer competitors that have overtaken the giant in recent years.

The four models that have had a knife through their prices are the Avantgarde and AMG Line derivatives of both the GLC 220d and GLC 300d, but notably not the coupé or Mercedes-AMG models.

According to our sources at Duoporta, this is what you’ll pay for each of these Mercedes SUVs:

All four variants still fall under the Mercedes five-year/100,000 km service and maintenance plan.

Mercedes is hoping its decision to cut prices for some of its more popular models will help it claw its way back up the local sales ladder.

Bang for your buck

Despite the price slashes, all of the SUVs remain entirely unchanged, offering buyers the opportunity to own one of these luxury vehicles for much less than before.

All of these GLC diesels are fitted with turbocharged 2.0-litre motors, 9-speed automatic transmissions, and offer drivers four-wheel drive.

In terms of performance, the two GLC 220 models are good for 162kW and 440Nm, with frugal diesel usage of 5.2 litres for every 100km.

From a standing start, they’ll manage to reach 100km/h in 8 seconds, before topping out at 219km/h.

The GLC 300d derivatives boast 215kW of power and 550Nm of torque, draining its tank at 5.5 litres every 100km.

This variant races to 100km/h in a very impressive 6.3 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 243km/h.

On the inside, you can expect to find a well-designed cabin with a selection of trims, as well as man-made leather seats and customisable ambient lighting.

The GLC range is also not short on tech, fitted with a 12.3-inch driver’s display, 11.9-inch central infotainment system, and the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) software.

This system offers smartphone integration, an array of USB ports, including two 12V sockets, and an advanced Burmester surround sound system.

Other conveniences include climate control, heating for any of its seats, and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and front passenger seat with memory function.

Coupled with a series of safety features such as blind spot and distance assist, as well as lane keep and parking assist, the GLC range offers drivers nearly every available convenience.
