German giant in trouble again

Volkswagen has been ordered to face a criminal trial in France related to the diesel-emission scandal that erupted more than a decade ago.

The German carmaker will stand accused of deceit “concerning goods that endanger human and animal health,” Agence France-Presse reported late on Friday, citing a source close to the case it didn’t identify.

The Paris court is expected to discuss trial dates in December, suggesting hearings wouldn’t begin until at least 2027, the news agency said.

VW representatives didn’t immediately respond to requests by Bloomberg for comment.

In addition to the Volkswagen case, French authorities are taking action against Renault and two Stellantis units, each of which has denied wrongdoing.

The scandal has reverberated across the industry, drawing in several carmakers and costing them tens of billions of dollars.

Last year in Germany, four former VW managers were convicted for their roles in the affair.

Mercedes-Benz Group, Ford and other manufacturers are embroiled in a mass class-action style trial in the UK.
