BMW has announced that its latest 2-Series is in the final stages of development.
The company shared a range of photos of the car in testing, with its body covered in “camouflage” to prevent easy identification of potential new design elements.
The company said the “unique selling points” of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé will include:
- Rear-wheel drive setup.
- Extremely powerful inline 6-cylinder engine.
- Almost 50:50 balanced axle load distribution.
- Extremely torsionally stiff body.
- Chassis technology consistently designed for agile and dynamic driving behaviour.
As part of the testing for the new vehicle, BMW has taken the 2-Series for drives on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife.
“In addition, testing on public country roads around Munich and at the BMW Group test site in Maisach ensure that the dynamic driving qualities of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé can also be experienced in everyday traffic and under different road conditions,” said BMW.
BMW M version
Car fans will be happy to hear that BMW is also developing an M version as the top-of-the-range option in the new 2-Series line-up.
“The BMW M240i xDrive Coupé draws its drive torque from an extremely powerful inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology,” said BMW.
This will see the car produce 285kW, with the power put down through an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and an all-wheel drive-system.
“The BMW M model puts its power to the road using the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system,” said BMW.
“The system’s rear-wheel oriented design ensures hallmark BMW driving pleasure in conjunction with a power distribution that adapts perfectly to adverse road and weather conditions.”
BMW went on to state that regardless of which BMW 2-Series selected, drivers will benefit from a range of features as standard.
This includes a torsion-resistant body structure and stroke-dependent dampers. The later allows for a “noticeably optimised balance between sportiness and ride comfort”.
An Adaptive M Chassis is then offered as an option for the new 2-Series, added the company.
Other features on the new car include powerful brakes and precise steering – with Variable Sports Steering available as an option.
