New Jaguar E-Pace for South Africa – Features and pricing

The new Jaguar E-Pace is now for sale in South Africa, at a starting price of R868,000.

The SUV has been updated with an enhanced interior, a revised exterior, and new engine options – including a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol unit.

This smaller unit saves 33kg on the four-cylinder motors from the brand, and is available with the plug-in-hybrid models.

These models produce 147kW from the 1.5-litre engine – and add an extra 80kW from the Electric Rear Axle Drive. A total of 227kW and 540Nm is therefore available.

This pushes the hybrid model to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds, while achieving fuel economy levels as low as 2.0l/100km, according to Jaguar.

The compact electric motor also provides up to 55km of electric range.

Alongside this variant, there are several 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engine options available, which are all paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The two petrol variants produce 184kW and 221kW, and 365Nm and 400Nm, allowing a 6.9-second 0-100km/h acceleration time in the quickest specification.

The diesel motor is only available in one model, where it generates 147kW and 430Nm.

Standard equipment on all E-Pace SUVs includes Jaguar drive control with three drive modes, and a new adaptive surface response programme.

Updated design

Apart from the new engine offerings, the E-Pace’s exterior and interior were also tweaked.

On the outside, it is treated to new all-round LED lights with “Double J” daytime running lights, a new grille with Noble chrome finishing, new side fender vents, and a new array of rear bumpers for the various trim lines.

The interior receives a 15W wireless charger in the front fascia, soft-touch materials around the instrument cluster, a lower and wider drive selector, a new multifunction steering wheel, and embossed Jaguar headrests.

Connected technologies are also a big focus for this update, and are accessed through an integrated 11.4-inch curved touch display.

Additional features include Google and Microsoft Outlook calendar integration, as well as “simplified menu structures” which allow drivers to access or view up to 90% of common tasks from the homescreen in two taps or less.

Paired with the infotainment display is a new 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display with a configurable layout, as well as a full-colour heads-up display.

The new E-Pace also sports the ClearSight rear view mirror, which uses a 3D surround camera to offer an unobstructed view of the road behind.

This is in addition to Junction view, 3D Perspective view, and ClearSight Plan View – a range of camera abilities in the SUV.

Jaguar’s Driver Condition monitor also detects if the driver is starting to feel drowsy.

All these systems combine to give the new Jaguar E-Pace a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
