One South African province saying goodbye to potholes

The Western Cape is putting the power to report road maintenance issues in the hands of its residents through the Roads4U mobile app.

Launched by the Western Cape Government Department of Infrastructure (DOI), the app is available on both Apple and Android and allows users to report a wide range of infrastructure defects.

This includes road surface damage and potholes, faulty traffic signals, and faded signage.

Through the initiative, the province aims to enhance its road network by leveraging real-time data through citizen collaboration.

DOI Operational Support Director Jandré Bakker noted that a key citizen-focused feature of the Roads4U app is automatically identifying the report and sending it to the relevant road authority.

“For example, if you log a defect on a road managed by the City of Cape Town or SANRAL, the platform identifies the responsible authority and forwards it at scheduled intervals,” he explained.

“The app informs you which authority received your report and how to contact them.”

During its launch, the DOI announced that key Roads4U features include:

  • Intuitive Reporting: The app pins the exact GPS location of a reported issue to ensure accuracy.
  • Multimedia Support: Users can upload photos and detailed descriptions to assist repair teams.
  • Transparency: Citizens receive status updates from the technical teams on their reports. Reports are assigned unique reference numbers, allowing citizens to track progress.

It was also announced that future updates will include a broadcast function to provide all app users with real-time information regarding road closures and more.

Western Cape Provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, explained that for years, the province’s engineers have used multiple internal processes to coordinate roadwork.

“Roads4U simplifies these workflows by directing the public to the correct official or authority, reducing unnecessary steps and delays,” he noted.

“This modern approach strengthens collaboration and helps us maintain the best provincial road network in South Africa while ensuring our service delivery remains agile and responsive.”

The department is prioritising safety-related issues and is committed to providing transparent explanations when an issue cannot be addressed immediately.

A welcome development

The development of the Roads4U app has been welcomed and hailed as a crucial step in modernising infrastructure management and service delivery.

Rikus Badenhorst, chairperson of the Select Committee on Public Infrastructure and Minister in the Presidency, congratulated Simmers and his department on a successful rollout.

“Effective road infrastructure is a critical enabler of economic growth, job creation and safe mobility,” he added.

“When roads function well, goods move efficiently to market, tourism flourishes, and commuters travel safely to work and school.”

“Tools such as the Roads4U app demonstrate how technology can be used to strengthen accountability and accelerate service delivery.”

Badenhorst noted that the app improves coordination between the province’s different road authorities.

Reports that fall under the jurisdiction of the South African Road Agency (Sanral) will be automatically routed to the relevant authority; the same is true of municipal road networks.

“Across South Africa, we must increasingly embrace solutions that make infrastructure maintenance more efficient, transparent and collaborative,” noted Badenhorts.

“The Roads4U app provides a practical example of how digital innovation can support better governance.”

The chairperson commended the department for its forward-thinking initiative and encouraged Western Cape residents to make use of a practical tool that is now at their disposal.

“We encourage residents across the province to make use of the platform to help keep our roads safe and well-maintained,” he said.

The Roads4U app has also been well received by residents, and at the time of publication, has a 4.4-star rating on the Google Play Store and a 5-star rating on the App Store for iPhone.
