Ford has issued a safety recall for the Transit and Tourneo Custom in South Africa over a potential safety risk.
The Blue Oval notified the National Consumer Commission (NCC) of a recall applying to select Transit and Tourneo units from the 2022 to 2026 model years.
This recall affects a total of 582 units, which were sold in South Africa between 2021 and 2025.
According to the Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, the affected vehicles may have an issue with the H7 AGM battery.
The battery may produce an acidic smell similar to that of rotten eggs inside the cabin, a hissing sound, or visible gas venting from the battery, said the NCC.
The seating area inside the vehicles may be unusually hot.
Furthermore, Ford indicated that the increased temperatures may cause a reaction in the battery that produces hydrogen sulphide gas.
Prolonged exposure to this gas can pose potential health risks to vehicle occupants.
The NCC urged owners of the affected models to take their vehicles to their nearest dealership for repairs.
The necessary repair work will be done at no cost to the consumer.
Not the first recall for Ford

The Transit and Tourneo Custom are the latest in a growing list of recalls that Ford has issued for its vehicles in South Africa over the past year.
In August 2025, the carmaker issued a recall for the Ford Mustang, EcoSport, Ranger, Everest, and Transit Custom.
This affected a total of 21,777 units, comprising a range of issues from software glitches and mechanical faults.
The Ranger had a problem with the transmission main control valve body replacement, which caused the bakkie to move forward when the gear selector was in the neutral or reverse position.
Certain Mustang, EcoSport, Ranger, and Everest models had an issue with the Sync infotainment system, resulting in an error message and intermittent black screens that could disrupt functions like the reversing camera.
