10,000 Checkers Sixty60 drivers have earned over R160 million in tips in the second half of 2025, following reports of strong growth.
The on-demand delivery service has created over 18,181 jobs in around six years, and according to its most recent interim results for the 26 weeks ending 28 December 2025, sales grew by 35% from R8.8 billion to R11.9 billion.
This is a significant result as its biggest competitor, Pick n Pay, has a total market capitalisation of R14.8 billion.
Additionally, its active customer base increased by 20.1% in 2026, with nearly 95% of deliveries arriving on time.
This, Shoprite stated, combined with an average delivery time of less than 35 minutes and 97% of products delivered being first-choice items, has allowed the service to secure a high level of customer trust.
A key part of its impressive service delivery is the roughly 10,000 drivers in Shoprite’s Pingo platform, which offers delivery jobs on a contractual basis.
These drivers during the last reported interim financial period received roughly R160 billion in tips, translating to roughly R123 a day, assuming the average driver worked five days a week.
Along with these 10,000 drivers, it has also created jobs for store picking, operational, and support personnel who support the delivery process.
Another reason for this substantial tipping and job creation is the consistent growth in Sixty60’s coverage.
Over the last three years, Sixty60’s coverage has tripled, growing from 266 in December 2022 to 894 stores in December 2025.
Most of these stores are Checkers outlets, with some of the coverage also including 67 Shoprite stores.
The Checkers Hyper service is also supported by approximately 75% of all Sixty60 delivery locations.
This service supports the delivery of larger items and general merchandise such as home appliances.
Fuel and apps
Despite the recent increases in fuel prices, Sixty60 has maintained its delivery fee of R36.
This fee has only risen by R1 since the service’s app launched in 2019.
The Sixty60 app has also enjoyed considerable success since its launch, surpassing seven million downloads across the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
This is also thanks to the app’s development team steadily adding new features and improving performance.
These expansions have included increasing the service’s product range and improving its functionality, such as with a broader general merchandise offering.
Along with this, its speciality pet food delivery service is now supported across almost 150 locations, and its product range has expanded to include health and wellness items.
Sixty60 has also stated that customer service and user experience are key focus areas for them as they develop and manage the app.
“Our focus is on making the everyday effortless for customers, and with the recent launch of Pixie, our personalised AI assistant, we continue to find ways to make shopping even easier,” Sixty60 said.
The Pixie AI assistant will use users’ historical shopping behaviour to recommend certain products automatically.
Users can reject suggestions by swiping up or add them to their carts by swiping down.
