Best-selling Toyota cars and bakkies in South Africa

Toyota has revealed its best-selling cars and bakkies in South Africa for the month of May 2021.

Toyota released these details following Naamsa confirming it was once again the best-selling vehicle brand in the country during May – based on new vehicle sales volumes.

Leading the pack for Toyota was the Hilux bakkie, which sold 3,700 units during the month.

This was the highest monthly aggregate sales by any model this year, said Toyota.

“The Hilux’s mass appeal cannot be denied, and this is supported by the fact that it’s a top-seller in the Single, Extra, and Double Cab body types,” said Toyota.

Another top-seller in the light commercial vehicle segment was the Toyota Hiace, which sold 1,331 units.

Passenger vehicles

Toyota also performed strongly in the passenger vehicle segment, with the following vehicles performing well during May:

  • Fortuner – 872 units
  • Urban Cruiser – 717 units
  • Starlet – 651 units
  • Corolla Quest – 614 units
  • Agya – 517 units

Lexus and Hino

Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus sold 55 vehicles during the month, with the company stating the brand is leading the “company’s strategy towards the adoption of new-energy vehicles”.

“Lexus sold a total of 55 vehicles in May, with 22% being hybrid models – a clear indicator that, like its Toyota stablemate, Lexus is on a serious path to carbon neutrality.”

On the large-vehicle front, truck brand Hino sold 187 units.

98 of these units were 300-Series trucks, while 63 units were 500-Series trucks.

Another interesting fact thrown in by Toyota was that during May, over 124,000 vehicles across the Toyota, Lexus, and Hino brands were serviced.

“1.4 million part pieces were supplied to domestic dealers, with a further 314,000 shipped outside of the country,” said Toyota.
