The bakkie dominating the South African car market

The Toyota Hilux is not only the best-selling bakkie, but also the best-selling vehicle in South Africa, with 4,189 people picking one up in July 2026.

This is 1,676 more than the most popular passenger car in the country, the VW Polo Vivo, and 2,126 more than the second-best-selling bakkie, the Ford Ranger.

That said, the Ranger still put in a strong performance in July with 2,063 units, while third place went to the Isuzu D-Max with 1,969 units.

This is according to a report by Cars.co.za, based on industry sales data from Naamsa.

Fourth place was taken by the Mahindra Pik Up with 681 sales, and the GWM P-Series came fifth with

Interesting to note is that the top three bakkies are all locally made, while the Indian Pik Up and Chinese P-Series have become increasingly popular in recent years.

In sixth place we have the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 with 465 sales, which was followed by the VW Amarok with 352 units.

The JAC T-Series came eighth thanks to 254 customers, and the Nissan Navara and Foton Tunland closed out the top 10 with 216 and 209 units, respectively.

Overall, the top 10 bakkies sold 10,934 units, representing 18.94% of the 57,708 vehicles sold in South Africa in July.
