R9-billion investment for the Gautrain

Standard Bank has underwritten a R9-billion investment plan for the Gautrain, which is gearing up for a major expansion and service overhaul.

This comes shortly after it was announced that a new company, Sihamba Sonke Mobility, has been appointed as the new concessionaire to run the Gautrain.

The contractor has been assigned to operate, maintain, upgrade, and modernise the Gautrain system for 15 years, until 2041.

During this time, the service is set to greatly expand its rail network and grow its fleet from 24 four-car trains to 32, along with upgrades to its carriages.

Investments will also be made to build new stations and modernise the Gautrain’s payment processing systems.

“The Gautrain changed the way people move between Gauteng’s key economic centres,” said Agnes Nkosi, Standard Bank’s Corporate and Investments Banking Client Coverage Executive Vice President of Infrastructure.

The Gautrain was established in 2010 and currently operates a north-south line running from Pretoria to Johannesburg, along with a single offshoot serving OR Tambo International Airport.

Nkosi said the R9 billion investment will help to ensure that the Gautrain will continue to meet the demands of Gauteng residents over the coming years.

“This financing will help ensure that it continues to deliver that value as demand for efficient, reliable and lower-carbon transport grows,” she said.

Standard Bank added that the investment underscores the benefits of public-private partnerships in South Africa.

“By supporting the continued operation and modernisation of the Gautrain, the transaction brings together public- and private-sector expertise around a shared objective: sustaining reliable transport infrastructure that enables growth, access and connectivity across Gauteng,” it said.

The Gautrain has historically operated as a public-private entity, as the South African government owns the system while a private company is appointed to run it.

Massive expansion for the Gautrain

The R9-billion Standard Bank investment has been earmarked to improve the Gautrain’s existing systems; however, it also forms part of the service’s larger expansion plans.

In March 2026, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed that plans were underway to greatly expand the Gautrain network with new routes and stations, broadening access to the public transport service.

He said that the new Gautrain lines will go to Soweto, Mamelodi, Springs, Atteridgeville, Fourways, and parts of the West Rand.

The Gauteng Provincial Government has since gazetted the new routes and stations, including a 17.4km link to Lanseria Airport.

Other stations that have added to the expansion plans include:

  • Jabulani Station
  • Roodepoort Station
  • Cradle Station
  • Smart City Station
  • Samrand Station
  • Fourways Station
  • Sunninghill Station
  • Olievenhoutbosch Station

The route from Little Falls to Soweto will feature a 19.9km underground section, while the Cosmo City junction will serve as a hub for the expanded network.

At least 72km of rail is expected to be added to the network, roughly doubling the coverage of the Gautrain service.
