BMW has launched the four-door Gran Coupe body style for the 4 Series in South Africa, starting at R937,452 for the 420i Gran Coupe M Sport.
The 4 Series Gran Coupe is available in three specifications – 420i, 420d, and M440i xDrive – and comes with the “M Sport Model and Deluxe Package” as standard.
“Comfortable access to the rear compartment, five full-size seats, a large tailgate, and a variable-usage load compartment ensure the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé retains its model-specific skillset in everyday driving and on longer trips,” said BMW.
Standard features
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is based on the standard 4 Series Coupe – with a body that is 15mm longer and 59mm taller than the two-door variant.
The model-specific body increases rear-seat space for passengers in the Gran Coupe, said BMW, while the boot has also grown by 30 litres to provide 470 litres of cargo space.
The 40:20:40 split of the rear seats allows owners to expand cargo capacity to a maximum of 1,290 litres.
As standard, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is then fitted with LED headlights with daytime running lights, frameless windows with flush door handles, and M Sport bumpers and wheels.
Inside, it further offers dual-zone climate control, cruise control with braking functions, electric front seats, a sunroof, an electric tailgate, keyless entry and start, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.25-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, BMW Maps, and over-the-air software updates.
“Some 40 assistance functions designed to enable comfortable and safe driving and parking are available as standard or options for the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe,” said BMW.
Engines
The 4 Series Gran Coupe line-up is offered with three engines which are all connected to an eight-speed Sports Steptronic automatic transmission with gearshift paddles.
The 420i features a 2.0-litre, turbo-petrol motor that puts out 135kW and 300Nm, and drives the rear wheels only.
The 420d gets a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine producing 140kW and 400Nm, and drives the rear wheels only.
Combined fuel consumption for these configurations is rated at 6.5l/100km for the 420i and 4.9l/100km for the 420d, with 0-100km/h times coming in at 7.9 seconds and 7.5 seconds, respectively.
Both these Gran Coupes stand on 18-inch light-alloy wheels, too.
The range-topping M440i xDrive then sports a 3.0-litre, turbo-petrol engine generating 285kW and 500Nm, and drives all four wheels.
This version sprints to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250km/h, with its combined fuel consumption being 8.2l/100km.
Standard equipment on the M440i also includes 19-inch light-alloy wheels and an electronically-controlled, fully variable locking rear differential.
