
In November 2021, Toyota was once again the best-selling car brand in South Africa – followed by VW and Suzuki.
Toyota clocked one of its best months this year, selling 11,892 units in the local market.
These figures were revealed in the latest New Vehicle Sales Report by Naamsa.
The numbers
New vehicle sales in November 2021 increased by 2,573 units (6.6%) when compared with November 2020, to a total of 41,588 units.
Export sales, however, declined by 42.2% when compared to the same period – to a total of 19,548 units in November 2021.
Out of the total reported industry new vehicle sales, an estimated 84.2% represented dealer sales, 11.5% represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 2.4% represented sales to the government, and 1.9% represented industry corporate fleets
The total industry sales for November 2021 were divided into the following segments:
- Passenger vehicles – 27,828 units (Up 9.4% YoY)
- Light commercial vehicles, bakkies, and minibuses – 11,156 units (Down 0.8% YoY)
- Medium trucks – 779 units (Up 22.1% YoY)
- Heavy trucks and buses – 1,825 units (Up 8.1% YoY)
“Despite several challenges during the month, including the first interest rate hike in three years, sustained load-shedding, and a new Omicron Covid-19 variant that has sparked global alarm, the new vehicle market continued to show resilience on its gradual recovery path,” said Naamsa.
Best-selling brands
Following Toyota’s 11,892 new vehicles sold in the month was VW, with its sales number at 5,498 units in November.
Suzuki clawed up two spots to move from fifth to third during the month, with its sales improving to 3,082 units.
Hyundai sits tightly in fourth place, while fifth place is now occupied by Nissan. Nissan was third in October.
Ford had a great performance during November to jump from ninth to sixth place, while Isuzu did equally well to go from 10th to seventh.
Renault moved up from sixth in October to rank eighth in November, with Kia moving from seventh to ninth.
Haval now sits in 10th place in November, after achieving eighth in October.
