VW has released two more design sketches of the next-generation VW Amarok, showing us the first sneak peek of the bakkie’s interior, as well as hinting towards which design elements are final.
The next-generation VW Amarok will be a completely new vehicle with “clear Volkswagen DNA”, said the company, and will be built in South Africa at the Ford assembly plant in Silverton.
The new bakkie is described by VW as being a “vehicle that feels at home not only in the Australian outback but in South Africa’s wilderness too,” and it will be unveiled in 2022.
What to expect
VW said the new Amarok will look better and be more capable than the outgoing generation, featuring a new design from the ground up.
The bakkie will sit on Ford’s third-generation T6 platform that underpins the 2022 Ranger, have “significantly more driver-assist systems,” and know “how to impress customers in terms of connectivity,” said VW.
“The highlights of [the] new Amarok are without doubt its versatility and off-road capabilities.”
The company added that the 2022 Amarok will have innovations that are yet to be seen in the segment.
Looking at the available illustrations of the next-gen Amarok thus far, it’s become clear that a few design elements are close to completion.
In the newest images, it is apparent that the next-gen Amarok will likely feature a horizontal LED crossbar integrated into LED headlights, bonnet bulges and decals, a sports bar in the load box, side steps, and roof-mounted lights with a roof rack which will presumably be an optional extra.
From the first interior image provided by the company, you can also see an entirely new interior design that features the newest iteration of VW’s multifunction steering wheel, similar-looking seats to the current Amarok, a digital instrument cluster, a sunroof, a vertical centre control stack and infotainment display, and two-tone upholstery options.
“The striking front and above all the defining X design clearly distinguish the new Amarok and emphasise its claim to be leading the way,” said VW.
Amarok in South Africa
“The new Amarok will be launched in South Africa next year,” VW South Africa told TopAuto.
“We will confirm exact and more details on this in the new year.”
We expect the next-gen VW Amarok to be unveiled before the middle of 2022, in line with the 6-8-month launch timeframe between the unveiling of the 2022 Ford ranger and local sales launch.
