South Africans are set to pay a lot more for petrol from Wednesday, with hikes putting prices at over R21 per litre.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has announced that all grades of fuel will have their prices increased by over R1 per litre next week.

The hikes will be implemented at midnight on 2 March 2022.

A breakdown of the fuel prices hikes for March are listed below.

  • Petrol 95 – increase of R1.46 per litre
  • Petrol 93 – increase of R1.46 per litre
  • Diesel 0.05% – increase of R1.44 per litre
  • Diesel 0.005% – increase of R1.48 per litre
  • Illuminating Paraffin – increase R1.21 per litre

For inland consumers, this means the following official fuel prices for the coming month:

  • Petrol 95 – R21.60
  • Petrol 93 – R21.35
  • Diesel 0.05% (wholesale) – R19.49
  • Diesel 0.005% (wholesale) – R19.55
  • Illuminating Paraffin – R13.19

Contributing factors to the price increases were rising international petroleum product prices, and an increase in the slate levy of 15c per litre.

“For the first time in history, 95 octane petrol inland will rise above R21 a litre, and by a significant margin,” said the AA.

“These increases will certainly impact on every single South African given the reliance the country has on fuels for transportation, manufacturing, and in the agricultural sector.”
