Next-gen Ford Everest unveiled – All the details

Ford has unveiled the next-gen Everest, the third generation of its mid-size SUV.

The new Everest sits on the same T6 platform as the next-gen Ranger bakkie, with slightly different steering tuning lending the SUV a unique driving feel, said Ford.

Depending on the market, the new Everest will be offered in three specification grades – Sport, Titanium, and Platinum – and have four engines to choose from.

What’s new

The design of the new Everest is akin to that of the Ranger, with the models being nearly identical in the front section.

The SUV’s wheels were moved outwards, with the two at the front moving 50mm forward, and coil-spring rear suspension was fitted.

This provides much-improved on-road handling through corners, as well as increased wheel articulation for enhanced off-road driving, said Ford.

Providing power in the new Everest is then a 2.0-litre single-turbo or bi-turbo diesel engine, a 2.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, or a 3.0-litre, V6 turbo-diesel engine.

Drive is handled through either a six-speed or 10-speed automatic transmission, with a rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive systems delivering power to the ground.

In the entry-level specifications, an electronic shift-on-the-fly system drives the rear wheels until four-wheel drive is needed.

The higher-up models get an advanced four-wheel-drive system with automatic torque distribution, which can either function in rear-wheel-drive or permanent all-wheel-drive – depending on the needs of the driver.

A two-speed transfer case with low-range gears is standard on these specifications, too, while each model boasts a rear locking differential and two tow hooks.

To further bolster its off-road performance, the new Everest offers an improved approach angle and higher ground clearance – while its 800mm wading depth and exit angle are equal to that of the previous model.

In the variants with the V6 engine, Ford said maximum towing capacity now stands at 3,500kg – compared to the maximum towing capacity of 3,100kg in the outgoing generation.

When standing still, the new Everest can also support up to 350kg on its roof rails. This goes down to 100kg when on the move.

Spacious cabin

Inside, the manufacturer has spent a lot of time maximizing space, improving sound insulation, and fitting soft-touch panels to enhance comfort.

The cabin was also completely redesigned with a digital instrument cluster and vertical touchscreen running the SYNC4 operating system now forming part of the standard equipment list.

In the cheaper models, these are 8.0 inches and 10.1 inches in diameter, respectively, whereas those on the pricier variants measure 12.4 inches and 12 inches.

Additionally, the sense of space is amplified by a “coast-to-coast” instrument panel with pop-out cup holders, as well as larger third-row seats with new storage pockets, said Ford.

In response to customer feedback, the manufacturer also reshaped the rear boot lid to offer more head clearance and easier access, with a larger rear lip in the boot compartment – which Ford calls the “apple catcher”.

Depending on the specification, the new Everest will provide a 10-way electrically-adjustable driver seat, an eight-way electrically adjustable passenger seat, heated seats for the first two rows, second and third-row seat adjustment through the infotainment screen, a wireless charger, a 360-degree camera system, ambient lighting, exterior “zone lighting”, and a flattened e-shifter with an electronic parking brake.

This e-shifter not only brings a stylish look to the gear levers of old, but the models with it fitted also feature the Park Assist 2.0 programme that enables the SUV to park itself at the press of a button.

A host of advanced driver assistance systems are also included in the more expensive Everests.

This includes lane-keep assist with road-edge detection, LED matrix headlamps, pre-collision assist with intersection functionality, evasive steer assist, reverse brake assist, an electric trailer brake controller, and blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage.

In addition, three versions of adaptive cruise control will be made available – depending on the market.

The first maintains a pre-set speed and distance from the car in front, the second adds autonomous lane centering, and the third adds speed sign recognition with intelligent speed control.

Nine airbags are fitted, too, with full third-row coverage and an airbag between the front two seats being new innovations on this Ford.

Availability

The South African order books for the next-gen Ford Everest will open in Q2 2022, said Ford South Africa.

The SUV’s local pricing and launch timing must still be confirmed.
