New Mahindra XUV300 launched in South Africa – With a 5-star safety score

Mahindra South Africa has launched the updated XUV300, which the company said is the safest new car on the market.

The intergenerational update is aimed at improving safety in the crossover, resulting in a 5-star Global NCAP crash test score for the vehicle.

Making this more impressive is that the base XUV300 W4 with two airbags was the model put through testing – with up to seven airbags and additional safety features found further up the range.

Six specifications of the updated XUV300 are now available in South Africa, at a starting price of R234,999.

What’s new

The addition of standard equipment to all three specification grades – W4, W6, and W8 – as well as a new W4 Special Edition (SE) trim has been introduced.

Throughout the range you’ll find a dark interior, which replaces the ivory and beige interior from before, due to customer feedback.

Owners of the W4 SE, W6, and W8 models also get a 9-inch infotainment display, providing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Additionally, standard equipment on the W6 includes a new rear window wiper and demister, satellite navigation, and cruise control.

In the range-topping W8, you will then find dual-zone climate control, leatherette seats, a sunroof, a leather steering wheel, a self-dimming rear-view mirror, automatic LED headlamps with daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, and height adjustment for the driver’s seat.

With particular attention to improving safety, the new XUV300 sports a raft of upgrades that helped it achieve the highest combined score of any vehicle in the #safercarsforindia campaign yet, said the Global NCAP organisation.

Standard safety systems across the range comprise two airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with emergency brake force distribution, disk brakes on all four wheels, speed-sensitive door locks with impact-sensing unlock, a collapsible steering column, and pretensioners and load-limiters for the front seatbelts.

By stepping up to the W8 you’ll also get seven airbags, dynamic cornering brake control, a panic braking system, and hill-hold assist.

Performance

Two engine options are available in the upgraded XUV300: a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol or a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, both connected to a six-speed manual gearbox.

The outputs for these powertrains are:

  • Petrol – 81kW/200Nm
  • Diesel – 86kW/300Nm

Combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.3l/100km for the petrol and 6.1l/100km for the diesel, with top speed pegged at 175km/h for all models.

Price

The South African pricing for the updated Mahindra XUV300 range is as follows:

Each models is sold with a 5-year/150,000km warranty.

The W4 and W4 SE then get a 3-year/50,000km service plan, while the W6 and W8 are sold with a 5-year/90,000km service plan.
