Massive new car sales in South Africa – Here are the top brands

There were 50,607 new vehicles sold in South Africa in March – making the month the biggest for sales since October 2019.
7,184 more units were sold last month than in March 2021, reflecting a 16.5% increase year-on-year.
Toyota led the pack once again by selling 15,008 units in March, breaking its sales records for a third consecutive month.
The numbers
During March 2022, the new passenger car market recorded 33,790 sales – 27% more than a year before. The car rental industry accounted for 11% of these purchases.
Light commercial vehicles – including bakkies and mini-buses – achieved 13,795 sales last month, taking a 2.7% dip compared to March 2021.
Both medium and heavy truck segments then increased their sales in March 2022 by 18.4% and 14.5%, respectively – to a total of 798 units and 2,044 units.
Out of the total reported new vehicle sales, an estimated 85.8% represented dealer sales, 8.2% represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 4.6% represented sales to the government, and 1.4% represented sales to industry corporate fleets.
The cars
Toyota and VW took first and second, respectively, for new vehicle sales in the country during March 2022.
Hyundai sits in third, trading places with Suzuki who was third in February. Suzuki is now fourth, a spot that was held by Hyundai the month before.
Nissan remains in fifth place, while Renault is now sixth, compared to seventh in February.
Seventh in March is accounted for by Ford, moving up one spot – and eighth is taken by Haval, who was sixth the month before.
Kia kept ninth and Isuzu tenth, as they did in both January and February.
