The Toyota GR Supra – which launched in South Africa in mid-2019 as an eight-speed automatic only – is getting a new manual specification.
“Yes, we will be introducing the new manual transmission variant,” Toyota South Africa told TopAuto. “You can expect a Q3 introduction.”
Toyota said it will showcase the manual Supra alongside other new models at the Festival of Motoring in August, with the local pricing to be announced at the time.
The company did not confirm whether the manual would be more affordable than the automatic Supra in South Africa – the latter of which currently starts at R1,111,000.
GR Supra specifications
Toyota teased its new GR Supra model last week by announcing that it will be launched globally later the year with an “all-new, tailor-made manual transmission.”
The automaker did not say how many gears it will have, only that it will be differentiated by a red Supra badge – “a highly desirable, pure, and special feature.”
The gearbox will be mated to the Supra’s current 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine that puts out 250kW and 500Nm in the domestic market.
The automatic variants are propelled to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 250km/h, but Toyota has not yet said if the manual models will beat this.
It is also expected that the GR Supra Manual Transmission will come with an active differential, adaptive variable suspension, and sports braking system as standard – similar to the automatic versions.
“Developed to meet the demands of driving purists, the Toyota GR Supra Manual Transmission has been engineered to offer enthusiasts something that is closer to the Gazoo Racing DNA and will enhance the driving experience,” said Toyota.
In contrast to most other manufacturers, it seems that Toyota is not planning to end its love affair with manual gearboxes any time soon, as it concluded its GR Supra Manual Transmission teaser with #savethemanual.
