New BMW 7 Series confirmed for South Africa in 2022 – Photos and specifications

BMW has revealed the new 7 Series, which is set to be released in South Africa this November.

The flagship of the new line-up is the i7, an electric version of the luxury sedan, adding another EV to BMW South Africa’s lineup.

Two specifications of the new BMW will be available in South Africa at launch – the i7 xDrive60 and 740i.

i7 specifications

The new i7 boasts a 101.7kWh battery, which combined with two electric motors in the front and rear delivers a power output of 400kW and 745Nm.

A two-stage, single-speed transmission drives all four wheels and maximum range is currently estimated to be between 590-625km.

It then takes 34 minutes to achieve an 80% charge using a fast-charging outlet, said BMW.

Acceleration from 0-100km/h is completed in 4.9 seconds and the electric sedan reaches an electronically limited top speed of 240km/h.

740i specifications

The 740i uses a turbocharged, 3.0-litre petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology.

This combination generates 280kW and 540Nm, and gives the car an acceleration time from 0-100km/h of 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.

Feeding drive to the wheels is an eight-speed steptronic transmission, and fuel consumption is estimated to be between 7.0-8.0l/100km.

Features

The new 7 Series range will feature Swarovski crystal headlights, a kidney grille with illuminated surrounds, and dynamic lighting with graphical projections in the area outside the doors.

Alloy wheels are standard on all models, with the smallest size clocking in at 19 inches.

In addition, the vehicles will be fitted with four-zone climate control, panoramic glass roofs, and a 31.3-inch infotainment layout for the rear seats – displaying in a 32:9 format with an 8K resolution

A Bowers & Wilkins sound system is integrated into the head restraints, too.

For the driver, a 12.3-inch driver’s display and 14.9-inch control display are fitted, while the cars’ interior trim will be of either fine wood or carbon, depending on the model.

The seats are wrapped with Veganza – a “leather-like” material – and optional extras include a selection of four interior colours, front armrest heaters, additional speakers, and a two-tone paintjob.

Safety features comprise a front collision warning system, parking assist, steering and lane control assist, active navigation, automatic speed limit assist, route monitoring, traffic light recognition, lane change assist, and maneuver assistant.

The complete list of market-specific features for the new BMW i7 xDrive60 and 740i will be made available closer to its launch date, said BMW.
