Special-edition BMW M4 launched – 5 units coming to South Africa

BMW has launched the M4 Competition Coupe M xDrive 50 Jahre edition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the high-performance M brand.

“On 24 May 1972, the partnership agreement for BMW Motorsport GmbH was signed. Exactly 50 years later to the day, the company now known as BMW M GmbH is presenting an exclusive collection of edition models as a current anniversary highlight,” said the manufacturer.

A limited number of units, exclusive design elements, and a range of tailored options allow buyers of the M4 50 Jahre to create a unique BMW of which there will be few others on the road.

50 Jahre specifications

The new 50 Jahre edition is based on the “most successful model series in the history” of the M brand, the M4 Competition Coupe.

“The exclusive character of the edition model is the result of a market-specific configuration with unique design features and a strictly limited number of units in each case,” said BMW.

The five examples on their way to our shores are styled with San Marino Blue paint, double-spoke Gold Bronze M forged-alloy wheels, and 50 Jahre badging on the interior door sill panels, headrests, and centre console.

A premium selection of racing-inspired equipment is further available to buyers of the special edition, including the M Performance front splitter in carbon, M Performance rear spoiler in carbon, and the M Performance exhaust system in Carbon/Titanium.

In South Africa, the 50 Jahre is then driven by the same powerplant as the M4 Competition Coupe xDrive it is based upon.

This model generates 375kW and 650Nm with its 3.0-litre, straight-six, twin-turbo motor, distributing power to all four wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

With this setup, the 100km/h milestone is evaporated in 3.5 seconds and top speed is pegged at a staggering 290km/h.

50 Jahre around the globe

In Europe and select other markets, the M4 50 Jahre is offered in a variety of hues including Carbon Black, Macao Blue, Brands Hatch Grey, Imola Red, and San Marino Blue.

Moreover, alongside the Gold Bronze rims, these regions also have the choice to colour their wheels Orbit Grey.

In China, the M4 50 Jahre is exclusively available in Fire Orange and Stratus Grey, with the wheel colour being dependent on the chosen body paint.

For the United States and Canadian markets, however, an M3 50 Jahre was produced in a limited run of 500 units and based on the four-door M3 Competition.

These high-performance sedans can be had in Vermilion Red, Techno Violet, Interlagos Blue, Fire Orange, and Limerock Grey – and they sit on Orbit Grey wheels as standard.
