The highly anticipated next-gen VW Amarok is nearly upon us and is set to make its global premiere tomorrow on the 7th of July, 2022.
VW’s latest bakkie is scheduled to be unveiled to South African audiences in Johannesburg, and members of the public can join in to watch the global media reveal of the new car.
The event will begin at 10h00 this Thursday and motoring enthusiasts can watch it by going to the VW Nutzfahrzeuge YouTube page, which will be updated as the launch unfolds.
The Amarok is scheduled to go on sale in South Africa in the first quarter of 2023.
What to expect
The new Amarok will be shipped in five trim levels, including the base model, the mid-tier Life and Style variants, and the top-of-the-line Aventura and PanAmericana.
The top-spec variations will offer motorists a choice of a vehicle more suited to the road, in the case of the Aventura, or for tearing about off-road, in the case of the PanAmericana, said VW.
It has not been confirmed what the pricing will be for any of these derivatives, nor has it been confirmed which drivetrains will be available for each version.
VW’s bakkie will come with a range of five turbocharged engines, including a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, as well as 2.0-litre, four-cylinder variants.
These engines correspond with the units being implemented in the new Ranger, which will comprise either a 2.0-litre single or bi-turbo motor, or a 3.0-litre V6.
The Amarok and Ranger will share many similarities as they are based on the same architecture, meaning the reveal of the VW tomorrow will also shed more light on what we can expect from the blue oval’s own bakkie when it makes its debut at the end of the year.
However, VW has assured fans that there is enough “clear Volkswagen DNA” to make the Amarok stand out from its peers.
Other details that have been confirmed regarding the new Amarok are its maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg and maximum load capacity of 1,200kg, depending on the trim, and its larger size over the older model – including a wheelbase that is 173mm longer.
The interior will also boast either a 10 or 12-inch infotainment screen, depending on the trim level, and the higher-spec models will include up to 30 driver-assist features, confirmed VW.
The VW Amarok will be produced locally at the Ford Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria.
