Incoming software update means your electric Porsche will always be the latest model

Your electric vehicle (EV) can always be the latest model, thanks to over-the-air software updates that are now starting to be rolled out by various carmakers.

Porsche is one of the automotive brands leading the industry in this regard, as it is launching a comprehensive data update for its Taycan electric supercars in a few short months.

“Regardless of vehicle age, engine, and body, all model variants can be brought up to the status of the 2023 model year with a software update,” said the company.

What the update does

Depending on how old any given Taycan is, owners will see improvements to powertrain efficiency and new functions will be added to the Porsche Communication Management system, according to the German automaker.

The new software will allow the EV to disconnect the front electric motor from the all-wheel-drive system when not needed to improve energy consumption, resulting in a greater range.

Furthermore, the fastback’s energy recuperation has been better optimized and this new information is able to be displayed on its all-digital instrument cluster.

Other optimizations include a refinement of the thermal management system to increase battery life, especially at low external temperatures. This will have the added benefit of improving the car’s charging times, too, said Porsche.

Existing features on the Taycan will also benefit from the new update, such as the Park Assist function that will now work from a greater range.

“We have extensively optimized the model series in almost every respect since 2019,” said Kevin Giek, VP of the Taycan’s development at Porsche.

“Following this update, anyone driving a Taycan from early in the car’s production run will be pleasantly surprised by how much has developed on the vehicle side since then.”

The update is free, but Porsche customers will need to take their Taycans to a service workshop to have it installed. The company is also offering the choice to retrofit an improved 22kW charger at additional cost.

The update will see a staggered rollout in various countries on a market-specific basis. Specific dates have not yet been confirmed.
