VW unveils first electric sedan – The ID. Aero concept

VW has unveiled a concept model of its first-ever all-electric sedan – the ID. Aero.

The Aero is currently making a limited testing debut in China, but the final car will eventually be sold in markets worldwide, said the company.

“With our Acccelerate strategy, we are intensively driving forward the electrification of our model range,” said Ralf Brandstatter, CEO of VW Passenger Cars. “Following the ID.4, this model will be our next global car for Europe, China, and the US. ”

ID. Aero details

The ID. Aero will be the sixth member of the company’s growing family of electric ID. vehicles.

Aerodynamics played a principal role in the design of the sedan’s body, resulting in a sleek roof and coupe-style body.

This gives the Aero a long wheelbase, with the concept model currently measuring almost 5-metres long. The result is a very spacious interior, according to VW.

The Aero will be equipped with a lithium-ion battery offering an energy potential of 77kWh, providing the car with a range in excess of 620km.

As the flagship model in VW’s electric line-up, the sedan also features a number of unique styling choices that will help to make it stand out in any street scene.

It will be fitted with 22-inch two-tone alloy wheels, IQ. LED Matrix headlights, a front horizontal light strip, and special honeycomb styling features on both the front and rear lamps.

A unique design element is that the door handles have been removed entirely, and in their place are illuminated touch surfaces – another decision made for the sake of aerodynamics.

Furthermore, as an electric car, the Aero will be capable of receiving over-the-air updates. Its electric architecture is also flexible and can be adapted for different body types, said VW.

This means there is a possibility for compact crossovers, SUVs, and minibus models to be produced in the future.

When it will go on sale

Production for the ID Aero will begin in 2023, and the first models are expected to go on sale in China in the second half of the same year, where it is projected that half of all new cars will be electric by 2030.

There are also plans to release the Aero in Europe and North America, which will be produced from the automaker’s plant in Emden.

Pricing will be confirmed closer to the release of the final product, however, it was confirmed that the car will feature in the premium mid-size market in terms of cost.
