The South African launch date and specifications of the new Tiguan R have been announced, with VW promising the new model brings the performance of a sports car while affording the utility of an SUV.
The sporty Tiguan is set to make its local debut in October of this year, slotting in at the top of the Tiguan line-up.
The Tiguan R will be powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine with a power output of 235kW while making use of a seven-speed DSG gearbox.
VW’s 4Motion technology also means it turns all four wheels giving it improved handling and agility, particularly when cornering, said the manufacturer.
This setup allows the high-performance VW SUV to achieve an impressive 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.1 seconds continuing on to a top speed of 250km/h – making it a mere 0.3-seconds slower than its hatchback sibling, the new Golf R.
Further complementing its abilities is an improved chassis over the standard Tiguans and adaptive shock absorbers, and massive stopping power is brought by a set of 18-inch brakes fitted with distinctive blue R logo calipers.
The ride height has also been lowered by 10mm, and a suite of driving profiles, including a model-specific “R” mode, is included.
This driving mode can be activated via a blue R button mounted on the steering wheel, and large paddle shifters offer a sportier driving feeling.
To further set it apart from the normal Tiguan, the R model receives numerous exclusive styling enhancements such as matte chrome finishes and 20-inch Misano alloy wheels.
For the athletic SUV’s interior, the seats are wrapped in Nappa leather emblazoned with the R logo, the dashboard sports a carbon grey finish, and the 10.25-inch digital driver’s display offers an integrated lap timer.
The infotainment system, meanwhile, will have support for wireless smartphone mirroring, voice control, and satellite navigation.
Other standard features consist of front and rear park assist, keyless entry and push-button start, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and an electric tailgate.
Optional extras on the SUV will offer buyers a Harman Kardon sound system, an area-view camera, adaptive cruise control with lane change assist, pedestrian monitoring, and emergency autonomous braking.
South African launch
The new VW Tiguan R will go on sale in South Africa in October 2022 and pricing will be revealed closer to the launch date, said VW.
Buyers of the Tiguan R will receive a 3-year/120,000km warranty and a 5-year/100,000km EasyDrive maintenance plan.
