New Honda Civic launched in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

The 11th-generation Honda Civic has made its way to South Africa, with prices starting at R669,000.

Only available in an RS specification – a first in the country – this new sedan will offer a sportier experience than the models that preceded it.

Performance

Under the hood of the new Honda is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine putting out 131kW and 240Nm.

Making use of a continuously variable transmission (CVT), natural responsiveness is ensured through Honda’s “Step-Shift” programming which simulates gear changes when accelerating, and handling and stability are also better than before thanks to a wheelbase measuring 35mm longer, said the carmaker.

This revised setup lets the new front-wheel-drive Civic sprint from 0-100km/h in 8.3 seconds and achieve a maximum of 200km/h, while netting an average fuel consumption of 6.2l/100km.

Three driving modes – Econ, Normal, and Sport – are also included to suit the situation at hand, and these can be cycled through using a switch on the centre console.

Features

The new Civic RS’ interior is fitted with leather and suede upholstery, red ambient lighting, black headlining, sports pedals, and eight-way adjustable heated front seats.

Furthermore, the centre console features a wireless smartphone charger and a 9-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, which takes advantage of a 12-speaker Bose sound system.

The 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster can also be controlled via the multifunction steering wheel, and the dual-zone climate control blows cool air through a honeycomb-textured dashboard.

More standard amenities are afforded in the form of adaptive cruise control, smart entry, keyless start, front and rear park distance control, a reverse camera, forward collision warnings, lane-keep assist, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, and a driver attention monitor.

Visually, a lowered beltline, longer hood, and larger windows than the outgoing Civic give the new sedan a sleeker profile, and a sporty presence is brought by LED headlights and taillights, RS bumpers and side skirts, a sunroof, matte black 18-inch alloy wheels, a boot spoiler, and a dual-exhaust outlet.

Pricing

The new Honda Civic 1.5T RS has a South African starting price of R669,000.

All purchases come with a 5-year/200,000km warranty, a 5-year/90,000km service plan, and a 3-year roadside assistance plan.
