When the next-generation Ford Mustang is being revealed

Ford has announced that the hotly-anticipated seventh-generation Mustang will be fully revealed in all its glory on 14 September 2022 at the Detroit Auto Show.

The automaker will broadcast the event on its various social channels.

For the special occasion, Ford is also inviting existing Mustang owners to join in on a cross-country trip called “The Stampede” with the starting point being Woodward Avenue, America’s first paved road.

The Stampede will then be capped off by a parade of Mustangs driving in convoy from Ford World HQ to Detroit’s Hart Plaza in the final moments before the next-gen muscle car is unveiled.

“With the backdrop of the Motor City, and thousands of invited Mustang faithful, Ford employees and global media in attendance, The Stampede kicks off the next chapter of the Mustang story,” said the company.

“For more than 58 years, Mustang has stood for exhilarating freedom, and now it’s time to welcome the next generation of Mustang.”

Everything we know

The next-generation Ford Mustang is expected to be more of an evolution of the existing model, rather than a complete revolution.

It will use most of the current Mustang’s foundation, therefore the dimensions and shape of the new model will be similar to what we have now.

From leaked photos and spy shots surfaced online, we can see the new Mustang still boasts the signature rectangular grille and squared-off lights, as well as the Fastback body style with a lengthy wheelbase which the muscle car has long been known for.

The cabin, however, is where the biggest changes took place, being completely redesigned featuring a new steering wheel, two integrated displays, two rectangular air vents instead of three circular ones, and restyled controls and buttons – while retaining almost exactly the same gear lever as before.

With petrol-powered engines taking the proverbial backseat to the development of electric drivetrains, the new Mustang will likely be sold with the same power units as the current generation, reports Gear Patrol.

As such, the new Fastback is expected to be available with a 5.0-litre, naturally-aspirated, V8 mill in South Africa, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Naturally, this is yet to be confirmed by Ford itself, so we can only hope the next-generation Mustang outperforms its older siblings in all the key areas.

The current rear-wheel-drive V8 generates 330kW and 529Nm, sprints to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 250km/h.

This sets the benchmark for the new Mustang and it remains to be seen whether the iconic American muscle car will match or beat it.
