BAIC has confirmed that its latest SUV, the B80, will launch in South Africa a little over two months from now at the end of October.
“This year, we are introducing the B80 that was rated one of the most reliable off-road vehicles in the world after the boxy four-wheel drive model achieved test scores that were seven times higher than those of its competitors,” said BAIC.
The B80 has been subjected to rigorous trials devised by the Chinese army, who have taken out a contract to use the vehicle in a military capacity.
South African motorists will have the opportunity to preview the B80 which will be making its first public appearance at this year’s Festival of Motoring taking place from 26-28 August at the Kyalami circuit in Midrand, Gauteng.
What to expect
The BAIC B80 is currently only sold in Eastern markets and the manufacturer has yet to reveal the South African specifications for the SUV.
To give a sense of what to expect, the Chinese B80 is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 powertrain capable of producing 205kW and 420Nm.
This drivetrain is then mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel drive system, giving the off-roader 2H, 4H, and 4L gear ratios. It also has an automatic differential on the rear axle for improved grip.
Furthermore, the SUV boasts an approach angle of 39 degrees, a departure angle of 33 degrees, a break-over angle of 25 degrees, and a maximum wading depth of 600mm.
The Chinese B80 is also equipped with a digital driver display, push-start button, sunroof, leather multifunction steering wheel, leather seats, climate control, and a touchscreen infotainment system.
In China, the B80 retails for 350,000 yuan, which translates to roughly R850,000.
However, it’s important to note that this is not the official South African pricing as factors such as import costs, taxes, and domestic dealer margins must still be accounted for.
