Get ready – Ferrari’s first SUV is near

Ferrari announced that the long-awaited Purosangue will be unveiled on Tuesday, 13 September.

Purosangue translates to thoroughbred, a fitting name for this legendary marque’s first-ever SUV as it will be a “pure V12 model” – hinting that no electrification will be taking place under the bonnet.

In a recent Twitter post, the company teased its new super SUV’s enchanting exhaust note with a short video clip.

After this, it’s safe to say there’s a small chance it will disappoint when the Purosangue finally hits the roads.

What to expect

The Purosangue is expected to feature the same 6.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, V12 powerplant as its sibling the 812 Superfast, mounted in front rather than behind the passenger cell.

In the Superfast, this setup churns out an enormous 588kW and 718Nm, propelling the two-door coupe to 100km/h in 2.9 seconds and onto a top speed in excess of 340km/h.

As is generally the case, though, this drivetrain will be tuned to fit the SUV’s unique chassis and body and therefore achieve different results in this application, although it’s unlikely to be much slower.

As Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna recently said, “From my and our test drives in the hills around Maranello I can tell you that it’s a true sportscar, and unlike any other.”

The SUV will also show off the brand’s refreshed interior design language.

The Purosangue will be the latest in a long line of Super SUVs to make it to market since the Lamborghini Urus, undoubtedly the Ferrari’s biggest challenger, reached showrooms in 2018, followed by the Bentley Bentayga, Maserati Levante, as well as the Aston Martin DBX.

Ferrari has purposely been late to the party as it was keeping an eye on what its competition is up to. Its previous CEO wasn’t too fond of high-riding SUVs, either, so maybe that also had something to do with it.

Nevertheless, the prancing horse’s late-mover advantage is that it was able to build a Super SUV that it knows will beat all the other ones on the market, and now we can do nothing but wait to see if it will.

If the Purosangue wants to be the leader of the pack, it will have to beat the DBX707, currently the most powerful luxury SUV in the world, which claims the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.3 seconds. With its V12 bowels it won’t be impossible, but it’s going to be tough.
