“Smart” Driver’s Licence Centre launched at Gautrain station – Details

A new “Smart” Driver’s Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) was recently launched at the Centurion Gautrain station by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport.

BusinessTech reports that this initiative is the result of a partnership between the roads department and the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA), with the end goal being for every Gautrain station to have a DLTC.

The Smart DLTCs are integrated into the RTMC’s administration system and use a “smart enrolment” system which debuted in 2021 at select DLTCs in the Gauteng province.

The Gautrain DLTCs are classed as “Grade F” licence centres and are therefore only authorised to process driver’s licence card renewals, temporary driver’s licence applications, and traffic fine payments.

How it works

The steps to follow to renew your driver’s licence card at a Smart DLTC are as follows:

  • Request/secure renewal slot online on eNatis
  • Download the confirmation document containing your booking reference, ID number, initials, and surname
  • Visit the DLTC on the specified date with the following:
    • ID and copy of ID
    • Four black-and-white ID photos
    • Old driver’s licence card/valid South African passport
    • Optional optometrist certificate not older than three months
  • Complete DL1 application form
  • Conduct an eye test (compulsory if you don’t have an optometrist certificate)
  • Complete payment on the Natis system and collect temporary driver’s licence
  • Collect new card after approximately four to six weeks

“You are encouraged to regularly check the status of your application, as you will not be automatically notified when it is ready for collection,” said the transport department.

“Driver’s licence cards must be collected within 90 days, otherwise the card will be destroyed, and you must start the process afresh.”

The department said applicants can track the status of their application on the Natis website.

Operating times for the smart DLTC facilities are:

  • Weekdays – 08h00 to 18h00
  • Saturdays – 09h00 to 14h00

The Smart DLTCs only accept electronic or card payments and will not take cash.
