Mitsubishi has updated its Xpander multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), capable of seating up to seven passengers, with a redesigned body and new features.
As before, the MPV is available in one trim level with a choice of either a manual or automatic transmission, with prices now starting at R329,995.
Updated standard features
Visually, the updated Xpander retains its SUV-like styling and now comes with T-shaped headlamps, more pronounced LED daytime running lights, and new rear LED taillights.
The ride height has been raised 20mm for a total of 225mm, partially thanks to the addition of new 16-inch alloy rims on the manual and 17-inch alloys on the automatic.
Moreover, the body has grown 120mm in length, resulting in better interior space, and the Mitsubishi also retains its 5.2-metre turning circle making it one of the easier vehicles to manoeuvre in its class.
The second and third-row seats then support a 60:40 split, and the third row can be folded flat to create more cargo space.
Normally, the boot can take 781 litres of luggage, but this can be increased to 1,608 litres with all the seats folded.
Furthermore, the second row now has a centre armrest and an updated rear cooler, and all occupants will benefit from the multi-zone automatic air conditioning with overhead vents.
All windows on the MPV are now electronic, too, and every seat row has access to 120-watt power sockets and under-seat storage compartments.
For the driver, a multifunction steering wheel is provided, as is an infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a rearview camera.
Engine
The new Xpander retains the 1.5-litre petrol engine found in the previous model, giving the MPV a power output of 77kW and 141Nm.
The manual MPV then uses a five-speed gearbox to send this power to the front wheels, which yields a fuel consumption return of 6.7l/100km.
Fuel consumption for the four-speed automatic version, however, is slightly higher, as it will average 7.0l/100km on a combined cycle.
Pricing
The South African pricing for the updated Mitsubishi Xpander is as follows:
This includes a 3-year/100,000km manufacturer’s warranty and a 2-year/30,000km service plan.
