New Toyota RAV4 GR-Sport revealed – The details

Toyota has revealed the new RAV4 GR-Sport which will be going on sale in Europe before the end of 2022.

The local subsidiary has yet to confirm whether the more athletic RAV will make it to South African showrooms, though with the ever-growing family of GR-branded models on the manufacturer’s catalogue we wouldn’t be surprised if it does.

In Europe, the new Toyota will be available as a mild or plug-in hybrid with a raft of sporty accessories as part of the GR-Sport designation.

The SUV is expected to fall in line at the higher end of the RAV4 range though not all the way at the top, following in the footsteps of the recently-launched Corolla Cross GR-Sport and Hilux GR-Sport.

GR makeover

Toyota confirmed its new vehicle will boast intelligent all-wheel drive and that the suspension system has been tweaked for improved handling over the standard models via the fitment of stiffer springs and shock absorbers.

On the topic of cosmetic additions, the new GR offering receives piano black wheel arches and side mouldings, more prominent fog light bezels with a black G-mesh pattern, and a new grille and front spoiler finished in dark silver on the mild hybrid and gunmetal grey on the plug-in specification.

Discreet GR badging has been applied to the front grille and back door, and it also sports five-spoke, 19-inch, gloss-black alloys with machined pinstripe detailing, making this Toyota “the first model to feature alloy wheels finished using a new, ultra-precise line-cutting technique,” said the automaker.

The interior, meanwhile, gained electronically-adjustable sports seats with memory function, finished with a “suede-effect” upholstery and synthetic leather bolsters, featuring silver contrast stitching and the GR logo emblazoned on the headrests.

A new panoramic-view monitor, 10.5-inch infotainment screen, and 12.3-inch digital driver’s display are also included as standard, as is Toyota’s T-Mate assistance package which brings emergency steering assist and pre-collision assist systems.
