The ABB FIA Formula E will make its South African debut in the beautiful city of Cape Town on 25 February 2023 for round five, season nine of the world championship.
The mother city will become the first sub-Saharan African city to play host to a round of the E-Prix with a quick track around its most famous locations.
It also signals the start of a five-year commitment to have the racing series in Cape Town.
“We have signed a long-term agreement with Formula E to stage the Cape Town E-Prix and look forward to delivering a marquee event for many years to come,” said Iain Banner, the Chairman of race promoters e-Movement.
“The race will be the highlight and focal point of a weeklong programme of activities that are intended to showcase the potential of electric vehicles by way of an e-Mobility Festival.”
Not only will Formula E and e-Movement bring the race to Cape Town, but the organisations are also staging an “e-Invest Summit” for attracting global investors to the local green economy.
“The City of Cape Town views Formula E as one of the key events that could go a long way in being a catalyst in the long-term recovery as well as the sustainability of the events and tourism industries,” said former Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato.
The track
The circuit that will be used for the 2023 Cape Town E-Prix is still pending FIA homologation, the preliminary track stretching for a total of 2.8km and featuring 12 turns.
The start line is in front of the Green Point Stadium on Vlei Road, where the cars will travel South West to Helen Suzman Blvd for the first turn left, from here they continue to Granger Bay Blvd for another slight left, following it down to Beach Road where there’s a 90-degree left waiting.
Beach Road runs nearly straight for well over a kilometre to Fritz Sonnenberg Road for a sharp left, and the drivers now race past Cape Town stadium where they meet Vlei Road again for a right turn and then cross the finish line.
In between these longer stretches of road will be a series of small turns around fixtures such as traffic circles which the drivers will have to navigate to make up the total of 12.
