Toyota Corolla Hybrid updated for South Africa – New models and pricing

Toyota has announced a new update for the Corolla Sedan Hybrid as well as an all-new hybrid engine option for the Corolla Hatchback.

The models received a slight refresh in specifications and design, and the hatch line-up also sees the removal of the base 1.2-litre engine.

Both Corollas are available in XS and XR spec, starting at R481,300 for the hatch and R492,700 for the sedan.

What’s new

For the Corolla Hatch, the biggest addition is that it’s now available with Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid motor which was previously only reserved for the sedan.

The drivetrain marries a 1.8-litre petrol engine with a mild-hybrid system and 1.3kWh battery to generate a combined 103kW, 13kW more than the fourth-generation system, while also achieving improved noise and vibration levels as well as fuel efficiency, said the manufacturer.

As before, both body styles are also available with a 2.0-litre motor powered purely by petrol offering 126kW and 203Nm – a 1kW and 3Nm improvement over the pre-facelift versions.

Though regardless of the selected powertrain, every Corolla turns the front wheels via a CVT gearbox.

In terms of capabilities, the updated Corollas gain Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 which boasts better camera and radar technologies than before. The package gives both the XS and XR grades a lane-keeping system with lane-trace assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with safe exit assist, and a pre-crash system.

Moreover, the sedan comes with rear cross-traffic alert that warns the driver of oncoming traffic when they are reversing out into the road, whereas the updated hatch is equipped with intelligent clearance sonar (ICS) which takes the sedan’s feature a bit further.

“ICS makes navigating tight parking spaces simple and safe at low speeds with automatic braking during unintended acceleration when parking, lessening the chances of an impact,” said Toyota.

The revisions continue with the XS models receiving a 7-inch multi-info driver’s display, but for the top-of-the-line XR hatchback, a 12.3-inch configurable cluster is now standard.

Also new for the latest Corollas are full-LED interior lighting, a more efficient wireless charger, two additional Type-C USB ports in the second row, and an updated 8-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Naturally, the interior and exterior design have been slightly tweaked to ensure the newer models can be recognised out in the wild.

Exterior touch-ups for the hatchback comprise redesigned bi-LED headlamps that now incorporate the turn signal and daytime running lights into one, a red outer lens for the tail lights, wider fog-lamp bezels across the range, new alloy wheels measuring 16 inches on the XS and 18 on the XR, and exclusively for the top-end XR, also chrome accents.

Inside the cabin, contrasting upholstery colours can now be chosen for a sportier feel.

Moving to the sedan, this variant gets a black garnish on the rear bumper, a new front grille with horizontal slats replacing the previously-used mesh pattern, 16-inch alloys on the hybrid models, and 18-inch wheels on the petrol.

Optionally on this model, buyers can now select red seat inserts instead of the previous blue inserts.
