New Alfa Romeo Tonale – South African pricing and features

Alfa Romeo’s second SUV, the Tonale, is now on sale in South Africa with prices starting at R739,900.

Three trim grades are made available to local customers in the form of the Ti, Veloce, and Speciale, each powered by the same hybrid drivetrain.

Features

Buyers of the new Tonale can expect a high level of equipment as each model boasts a total of 22.5 inches of screen real estate split between a 10.25-inch central touchscreen supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display with three layouts – Evolved, Relaxed, or Heritage.

Across the range, standard fitment for the premium Alfa continues with dual-zone climate control, an electric tailgate, wireless charging, autonomous emergency braking, drowsy driver detection, rear-seat reminder alerts, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and traffic sign recognition with intelligent speed control.

On the options list, buyers will find blind-spot detection, rear cross-path detection, a 360-degree high-definition camera system, semi-automatic parking, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.

Depending on the variant chosen, the SUV then rides on 17, 18, or 19-inch alloy wheels.

Engine

The Tonale range comes with a 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid drivetrain mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox turning the front wheels.

The turbocharged engine works alongside a “P2 electric motor” which contributes 15kW and 55Nm by itself, the entire system producing 118kW and 240Nm and achieving a combined fuel consumption of 5.7-6.2l/100km.

The electrified underpinnings also bring new abilities to the fore such as silent startup, energy recovery through braking, full-electric drive, and “e-Boosting”.

“e-Boosting allows increased torque on the wheels thanks to the electric motor that supports the petrol engine; moreover, by calibrating the torque delivered by the electric motor, it is possible to optimise the operating point of the petrol engine to its most efficient,” said Alfa.

Additionally, in full-electric mode, the Tonale allows the driver to creep along in traffic jams, park their car, and pull away without the need to activate the petrol engine.

More equipment on each variant includes a self-locking rear differential, and for the range-topping Veloce, also dual-valve electronic suspension with Sport and Comfort modes.

The South African pricing and model line-up for the new Alfa Romeo Tonale are as follows:

  • Alfa Romeo Tonale Speciale – R799,900
