The VW Polo Vivo was the company’s best-selling car in South Africa in 2022, with 19,445 units sold as of the end of November.
This equates to roughly a third of VW-badged cars sold in the country this year, as a total of 58,822 units have made their way off the showroom floor since January
The second most-popular model to come from the German automaker was none other than the locally-made Polo, produced at the Kariega plant in the Eastern Cape, which shipped as many as 14,212 units.
While the success of Volkswagen’s well-known hatchbacks is hardly a surprise, the carmaker reported a big increase in crossover and SUV sales thanks to the various models in its T-series, and passenger car sales as a whole are up 10% compared to the same period in 2021, said Steffen Knapp, head of the VW South Africa Passenger Cars.
“The Volkswagen T SUV model range was bolstered by the market introduction of the new Taigo, new T-Roc, new Tiguan Allspace, andnew Tiguan R this year,” said Knapp.
“In the first 11 months of 2022, we sold a total 16,062 T SUVs in the local market, which means that 30% of Volkswagen’s overall passenger car sales this year were SUVs,” he said.
T-Cross sales saw a significant jump of 44%, equating to nearly 10,000 units purchased in 2022.
The most popular model for buyers, on the other hand, was the Tiguan with 2,334 units, and this was closely followed by the T-Roc and Taigo with 2,143 and 1,739 units, respectively.
As many as 151 Touaregs, with a starting price of R1.3 million, were also sold, and the Amarok proved to be the brand’s favourite light-commercial vehicle with 1,823 units finding new homes.
