Suzuki has unveiled a five-door Jimny which is confirmed for a domestic introduction, however, “no dates are available as yet for launch in South Africa,” the manufacturer told TopAuto.
Revealed earlier this week as the Auto Expo 2023 in India, the new Jimny takes a more practical approach to budget off-roading than its sibling by offering two additional doors, allowing for unrestricted access to the second-row seating.
5-door Jimny specs
The new five-door Jimny adopts special rear seats and a model-specific interior trim in the passenger compartment, allowing for “unique interior features such as front seats that can fold flat to connect with the rear seat and create two cushioned sleeping spaces for adventurers who want to spend the night inside the Jimny on rugged adventures,” said the manufacturer.
It also gained a tweaked design and equipment “to appeal to a wider range of customers,” said Suzuki. In the Indian variants, this includes a 9-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an Arkamys sound system, automatic LED headlamps, push-button start, climate control, a rear-view camera, hill hold and descent assist, and 6 airbags.
Like the existing model, the newcomer is powered by a naturally-aspirated, 1.5-litre petrol motor mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. The drivetrain generates 77kW and 134Nm – 2kW and 4Nm more than the three-door.
The larger Suzuki gets a limited-slip differential and the AllGrip four-wheel-drive system, too, bringing two-wheel, four-wheel high, and four-wheel low drive settings.
As expected, the two additional entryways did add a bit of bulk to the compact off-roader’s body, the dimensions compared below:
Specification | Jimny 3-door | Jimny 5-door |
---|---|---|
Length | 3,625mm | 3,985mm |
Width | 1,645mm | 1,645mm |
Height | 1,670mm | 1,720mm |
Wheelbase | 2,250mm | 2,590mm |

“Suzuki Auto South Africa hopes to add the new five-door Jimny to the local Jimny line-up sooner rather than later. More information on local launch date, the exact line-up, specifications, and range will be made available at a later stage,” said the automaker.
