
The next-generation Ford Ranger family which launched in December in double-cab guise only has been expanded with the introduction of single-cab and supercab body styles.
This brings the range up to a total of 23 variants split across four single cabs, six supercabs, and 13 double cabs.
The single cabs are offered in XL trim only and retail from R464,200, while the supercabs come in XL, XLT, and Wildtrak specifications with a starting price of R485,400.
Features in detail
Both single and supercab Ranger XLs feature 16-inch Sparkle Silver alloy wheels, black rear bumpers, cloth seats, a 10.1-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-inch digital driver’s display, rollover mitigation, adaptive load control, trailer sway control, and hill-launch assist – with the 4×4 models also getting hill-descent control.
Customers with more requirements have five XL Upgrade Packs to choose from, providing cosmetic and functional enhancements such as chrome finishes, dual-zone climate control, a rearview camera with parking sensors, cruise control, and 17-inch rims with either all-terrain or all-season tyres.
An off-road pack is on the options list, too, offering steel underbody protection for the front, engine, and transfer case, a plastic fuel tank guard, and 17-inch alloy wheels shod with all-terrain tyres.
Under the hood, the entry-level bakkies are equipped with a 2.0-litre, single-turbo diesel motor generating 125kW and 405Nm, mated either to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Both can be had in rear-wheel drive or with a shift-on-the-fly 4×4 configuration, and the entire range has a locking rear differential as standard.
In addition to the fitments of the XL grade, the XLT gets C-clamp LED headlamps with daytime running lights, a chrome bar running through the grille, side steps, a tow bar, a spray-in bedliner with a 12V power socket, and body-coloured mirrors, door handles, and rear bumper.
Standard amenities are made up of smart keyless entry and push-button start, “premium” cloth seats, a leather gearshift, rain-sensing wipers, a rearview camera with all-round parking sensors, and cruise control.
Six upgrade packs can also be installed on the XLT, encompassing add-ons such as a black grille, mirrors, and door handles, a black sports bar, painted accent colours for the bumpers and fog lamp bezels, 17 and 18-inch Sports wheels, and an off-road underbody protection kit packaged with all-terrain tyres.
Interior upgrades comprise dual-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad, embedded navigation, partial leather seats, and auxiliary accessory switches in the roof, as well as a collision mitigation system, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam activation.
As for power, the XLTs gain a 2.0-litre, bi-turbo engine alongside the aforementioned single-turbo variants.
This drivetrain generates 154kW and 500Nm and is exclusively paired to a 10-speed auto-box and 4×4 system, providing Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, and Slippery drive modes.
The top-spec Wildtrak stands out from its siblings with its model-exclusive mesh grille, mirrors, and bumpers coloured in Boulder Grey, along with the installation of front fog lights, roof rails, a rear sports hoop, aluminum load box rails, and 18-inch wheels with all-season or all-terrain tyres.
Luxuries throughout the cabin come in the form of power-adjustable front seats with partial-leather trim, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, “premium” floor mats, overhead auxiliary switches, a wireless charger, a 12.1-inch central display, adaptive cruise control with stop & go and lane centering, evasive steer assist, reverse brake assist, lane-keep assist with road-edge detection, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, rear cross-traffic alert, post-collision braking, and pre-collision assist.
The Wildtrak also sports an E-Shifter that provides a “short throw” between gears and enables the Active Park Assist 2.0 programme which automatically performs the gear selection, steering, acceleration, and braking during parallel and perpendicular parking.
The range-topper can only be had with the bi-turbocharged foundation and brings with two extra drive modes namely Mud & Ruts and Sand.
Depending on the model, payload capacity for the single and supercab Rangers sits between 964kg-1,186kg, however, a maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg is supported on all.
Practical touches found on all versions of the bakkie also include integrated clamp pockets, a ruler, and cupholders in the tailgate that transforms it into a workbench.
