Volvo South Africa has announced the pricing for the upcoming fully-electric C40 Recharge, which is scheduled to make its local debut in June.
The SUV will have an official starting price of R1,285,000 and each purchase will include a wall-mounted home charging box, a public charging cable, a 5-year warranty and maintenance plan, and a separate 8-year/160,000km warranty on the battery pack.
Initially, only 50 units have been earmarked for South Africa and interested parties can now pre-order the Swedish vehicle through the MyVolvo online store.
C40 Recharge specifications
The C40 is the first model from Volvo to be designed from the ground up solely as an electric vehicle (EV).
Like the XC40 P8 Recharge, it uses a twin motor configuration – one over each axle – which gives the car all-wheel drive, and this system is powered by a 78kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack.
In total, the crossover coupe has access to 300kW and 660Nm, which allows it to reach a speed of 100km/h in a blistering 4.7 seconds before capping out at 180km/h.
The high-capacity battery also means that the Volvo boasts a range of 444km, and 0-80% charge is possible in 40 minutes using a fast-charge outlet.
The C40 is a coupe-style SUV with a new rear-end design, improved aerodynamics, and a lowered roofline, yet it still provides a high seating position for the driver, said the automaker.
The rear boot offers a generous 489 litres of space and, since it is an EV, the C40 also has a front storage area with an additional 31 litres.
Inside, the C40 is also the first Volvo to be made with leather-free upholstery in favour of high-quality sustainable materials.
In South Africa, the SUV will be exclusively offered in the range-topping Ultimate specification, as such, buyers can expect electronically-adjustable front seats, front and rear heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger, and two-zone climate control utilizing the brand’s air filtration system.
Additionally, the dashboard features a 9-inch Android-powered infotainment system with access to built-in Google apps and services, and driving functions can be monitored using the 12.3-inch digital instrument display.
Other fittings include a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, and a suite of Volvo’s safety and driving assistance functions.
Volvo’s current goal is to have half of its sales comprise fully-electric models by 2025, with the remaining 50% taken up by hybrid units. By 2030, the Swedish carmaker intends on becoming a fully-electric brand.
