New Mercedes-Benz A-Class – What it will cost in South Africa

A good few months before its launch, Mercedes-Benz South Africa has listed the pricing of the facelifted A-Class hatchback and sedans.

The car is coming to local dealers in A200, A35, and A45 S grades, at a starting price of R729,554.

Mercedes-Benz’s domestic subsidiary confirmed that its refreshed entry-level model will go on sale in the second quarter of 2023, being one of the first out of 11 new vehicles the manufacturer plans to introduce throughout the year.

What you get

The new A200 in Progressive trim gets man-made Artico leather/Bertrix fabric upholstery, comfort seats, carbon fibre-look panels, a leather multifunction steering wheel, LED headlights with adaptive high-beam assist, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, a reverse camera, and 17-inch alloys.

An AMG Line is also available bringing Sports seats, a Nappa leather steering wheel, lowered suspension, “sporty engine sound”, and an AMG grille, wheels, and bumpers – as well as a Night Package with tinted glass, exclusive rims, and high-gloss black exterior highlights.

Buyers who opt for the more athletic A35 can expect Sports seats as standard wrapped in Artico/Dinamica microfibre upholstery, in addition to AMG exterior styling, aluminium cabin finishes, ambient lighting, keyless entry and start, a larger 10.25-inch driver’s display, a wireless charger, and model-specific 18-inch wheels.

Upgrading to the A45 S then adds even more aggressive bumpers, the AMG performance steering wheel, contrasting stitchwork, and 19-inch, five-spoke, light-alloy rims.

The flagship A-Class is the only one to be offered with the AMG Street Style Edition package, too, which tacks another R164,610 onto the asking price.

The optional extra sees unique 19-inch wheels, the AMG aerodynamics package, the AMG night package, AMG performance seats, dark/orange exterior trimmings, Edition decals, Grey Magno paint, illuminated door sills, and orange contrast stitching inside the cabin.

Powering the A-Class

Across the range, the facelifted A-Class benefits from the fitment of 48V mild-hybrid technologies with a belt-driven starter generator.

The A200 is equipped with a 1.3-litre, turbo-petrol engine married to a seven-speed automatic transmission generating 120kW and 250Nm. This model reports a fuel economy of 5.2-5.6l/100km and finishes the 0-100km/h dash in 8.2 seconds for the hatch and 8.3 seconds for the sedan.

The entry-level AMG A35 sports a turbocharged 2.0-litre unit with a more substantial 225kW and 400Nm on offer, whereas the halo A45 S pushes out a generous 310kW and 500Nm.

Both the high-performance siblings sit on the AMG suspension system and make use of an eight-speed, dual-clutch gearbox turning all four wheels, while the hybrid add-ons come with the benefit of 10kW of instantaneous overboost for quicker pull aways.

To that end, the 35 sprints past 100km/h in 4.7 seconds in hatchback spec and 4.8 seconds in sedan, whereas the 45 smashes the milestone in a mere 3.9 seconds.

Price

The South African pricing and model line-up for the new A-Class, according to the Mercedes-Benz configurator, are as follows:

  • Mercedes-Benz A200 hatch – R729,554
  • Mercedes-Benz A200 sedan – R784,554
  • Mercedes-AMG A35 hatch – R1,112,448
  • Mercedes-AMG A35 sedan – R1,006,041
  • Mercedes-AMG A45 S hatch – R1,256,243

Interestingly, the A200d and A250 have been removed from the facelifted family.

These prices also “exclude the cost of a service and maintenance plan,” said the website.
