BMW South Africa has listed the all-electric iX1 on its configurator for a starting price of R1,140,000 in xLine guise, earning it the accolade of being the most affordable electric BMW in the country just below the recently-launched entry-level i4.
Upgrading to the iX1 M Sport adds R40,000 to the base price in addition to a host of exterior and interior enhancements.
What you get
Similar to BMW’s other electric vehicles (EV), the iX1 provides a wide range of premium equipment as standard.
Buyers are spoiled with a 10.25-inch driver’s display, a 10.7-inch infotainment system with smartphone mirroring and BMW Connect apps, dual-zone climate control, a leather multifunction steering wheel, automatic tailgate operation, perforated artificial leather upholstery, cruise control with brake function, a reverse camera, parking sensors, all-round automatic LED lights, and 18-inch bi-colour wheels in a star-spoke design.
Advanced driver-assist features further comprise the attentiveness assistant, Active Guard which “monitors potential hazards, supporting drivers to react in time” as well as assists in maintaining the speed limit, and the Parking Assistant which makes it easier to squeeze into tight parking spots with the vehicle itself handling steering while the driver takes care of the accelerator and brakes.
If the M Sport package is selected, the equipment list is bolstered by an M leather steering wheel, sports seats, more athletic front and rear bumpers, the high-gloss Shadow Line exterior styling pack, interior finishes in Aluminium Hexacube, a “luxury instrument panel”, and distinctive double-spoke 18-inch alloys.
The iX1 is then available with one powetrain configuration only namely the xDrive30, in which it churns out 200kW and 494Nm from electric motors installed on both axles.
With this configuration, the all-wheel-drive crossover manages to complete the 0-100km/h sprint in a swift 5.6 seconds and cap out at a top speed of 180km/h, and it boasts adaptive M suspension as standard, too, which uses sensors to autonomously adapt to your driving style as well as road conditions for a more bespoke driving experience.
Driving range for the compact EV is further rated at a maximum of 440km and charging from 10-80% on a 130kW DC plug takes 29 minutes.
At home, when making use of a 22kW AC cable on three-phase electricity, the 64.7kWh battery replenishes 0-100% in just under four hours.
