South Africa will be receiving the new Hyundai i20 and i30, but it’s going to be a long wait.
A representative from Hyundai South Africa confirmed to TopAuto that the company will be bringing new versions of both cars to local shores, but that the i20 will not arrive during “this year”, while the i30 will only see an upgrade in 2024.
What we know so far
There is very little information about the hatchbacks thus far, but it has been stated that they will still feature internal combustion engines (ICE) to cater to the more affordable side of the market while the brand moves forward with its Ioniq line of electric vehicles (EVs).
The same cannot be said of the Hyundai Kona, however, as the automaker’s local branch has confirmed that it is investigating the possibility of a hybrid version for South Africa, which is likely to resemble the new Kia Niro.
The manufacturer further said that the i20 hatchback will receive a facelift, rather than a complete overhaul, which makes sense given that the current i20 only launched in 2021.
This existing i20 line-up consists of three trim levels – Motion, Fluid, and N Line – and three different engines with outputs as follows:
Engine | Power | Fuel consumption |
---|---|---|
1.2-litre petrol | 61kW/115Nm | 5.9l/100km |
1.4-litre petrol | 74kW/133Nm | 6.9l.100km |
1.0-litre turbo petrol | 90kW/172Nm | 6.9l/100km |
Prices for the entry-level Motion start at R304,900, all the way up to R428,900 for the range-topping N Line.
As for the i30, Hyundai said it will once again only be bringing the top-of-the-line N model to South Africa, but that we could expect an “upgrade” in 2024.
Like the i20, the current i30 N is not an old car by any means, as it only just launched last year alongside its crossover counterpart – the Kona N.
As a reference, the hot hatch currently has a 2.0-litre turbo-plant with a power ceiling of 206kW and 392Nm, which translates to a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.
Prices for the i30 N currently start at R779,900, putting it in the same league as other sporty hatches like the Toyota GR Yaris and VW Golf GTI.
