New R900,000 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Inkanyezi – A South African-exclusive 23-seater

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the new South African-exclusive Sprinter Inkanyezi, which is scheduled to go on sale in the country at the end of April.

The van has a starting price of R899,992, and for a limited time, buyers can obtain the Sprinter on a no-deposit, fixed-interest rate finance plan with a 2-year/unlimited kilometre warranty for R22,899 per month, said Mercedes-Benz Vans South Africa.

Inkanyezi specifications

The Inkanyezi is a locally-converted version of the popular Sprinter Van, which was first launched in the country in 2021.

Designed specifically for South African audiences, the Inkanyezi is intended to be used as a durable commuter vehicle with a seating capacity for 23 occupants, including the driver.

It runs on an updated all-aluminium, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine, which is significantly more compact than the powertrain on the outgoing model, said the company.

This drivetrain, which produces 110kW, is married to a six-speed manual gearbox and sends the power down to the rear wheels.

The updated powerplant also features a Stop-Start function for better fuel economy, and new exhaust-gas cleaning technology for better heat regulation and improved performance.

Other improvements to the Inkanyezi include more comfortable soft-textured seats in a black-and-grey colour scheme, USB ports for each row of seating, and a Bluetooth-capable radio system that now comes as a standard feature.

Both sides of the can are also equipped with lightweight parcel shelves for passengers to stow their belongings, and the seatbelts have been remodeled for enhanced safety, according to the automaker.

This is in addition to the equipment such as tinted glass windows, automatic headlights, a tow bar, a Marley rubber floor, lane-keep assist, hill-start assist, two front airbags, cupholders, and a complimentary first aid kit.

Optional extras on the van then include a multifunction steering wheel, park distance control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, active brake assist, 360-degree cameras, and a 10.25-inch MBUX infotainment screen.
