Prices cut for car registration and ownership fees in South Africa

The Department of Transport (DoT) has corrected the schedule of service fees for online car licence and registration applications through the Natis system that has been in effect since January 2022.

The changes made were as follows:

  • Online application, issuing, and delivery of a registration certificate – From R530 to R330
  • Online notification of change of ownership of a motor vehicle by current title holder – From R530 to R330

This signifies a reduction of R200, or 38%, for both payments.

In addition to these adjustments, the DoT has also corrected the “online booking” fee to accurately reflect what is included and excluded from the payment.

Before, the department included the processing and issuing fees along with the booking fee in the schedule, making it appear as if each booking would cost R250 before the licence was even processed, BusinessTech reports.

This has now been corrected, accurately showing that it only costs R22 to perform an online booking, less than 10% of what was initially thought.

The remainder of the service fees were unchanged and can be seen in the table below.

5-day licence renewals are doable

To relieve the pressure on the South African licencing authorities, the DoT said it will prioritise the launch of digital driver’s licences over the next three years.

Greater virtualisation and the automatic of the Driving Licence Card Account should make it quicker and simpler to apply for and renew driver’s licences.

“Moving away from paper-based processes in our service delivery environment would enable us to drastically cut the turnaround times. This should include processing of applications for operating licences, tourist accreditations, and other similar processes,” said the DoT.

In 2022, the average production time for a driver’s licence card was 26 days, and the DoT aims to reduce this to 14 days before the end of 2023. By 2025, it wants to have an average time of just 10 days, but it said that five days is also an “achievable goal.”
